Ilham Hussain (born May 23, 1955) is the wife of Dr. Mohammed Waheed Hassan, also known as Fili Waheedm the first elected Vice President of the Republic of Maldives.
Having been active in the national campaign, Ilham is believed to have been a great asset to movement although did not manager to secure enough votes in the first round, ending the 30 year rule of President Gayoom and her contribution to Dr. Waheed's Party - National Unity (Gaumee Itthihaad) - was invaluable.[1] In an entirely Muslim country, Ilham Hussain has held firmly to the nation's traditional liberal Islamic heritage and has refused numerous attempts to make her wear a veil as she does not believe in Koran. As the director of a company and an advocate for better childhood and health care development, Ilham is helping to make Maldivian livelihoods better, even though nobody knows about this, while standing up against the growing conservatism found in modern Maldives.[2]
